Hannu Salonen is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning film and television director known for his dynamic storytelling, visual precision, and emotionally resonant narratives. Born in Finland, Hannu's path to filmmaking has always been shaped by movement between cultures and perspectives. After graduating from Northbridge High School in Whitinsville, Massachusetts (U.S.), he returned to Finland to attend the renowned Kallio High School of Performing Arts in Helsinki. In 1993, he began studying directing at the prestigious Berlin Film Academy (DFFB), where he graduated with his debut feature Downhill City (1999), starring Franka Potente. Over the past two decades, Hannu has built a diverse body of work that spans crime thrillers, historical drama, and dark satire. His signature lies in combining cinematic elegance with bold, genre-defying storytelling. Whether it's Oktoberfest Beer & Blood for Netflix, the Nordic Noir Arctic Circle, or I Am Scrooge, the true-crime story of Arno Funke, Hannu brings intensity, nuance, and a distinctly European edge to every project. His recent series Shadowtower (Turmschatten) explores moral justice in a chilling psychological thriller, while Vienna Game, a historical satire for Disney+, re-imagines the chaos and diplomacy of post-Napoleonic Europe with wit and opulence.
