Biography

Safran spent his childhood in Paris, France. When the Germans took over the city during World War Two, Safran's father was sent to a concentration camp and he and his sister were separated from their mother. His family wanted him to be a doctor but he wanted to go into the performing arts. Safran emigrated to Australia, settling in Melbourne. In Melbourne he worked as a radio announcer before returning to France and working for French Television Services. He returned to Australia and worked for the ABC directing documentaries and dramas. Then Safran moved to Britain, directing for British television. Safran returned to Australia in the 1970s and directed feature films such as "Storm Boy". He wrote and directed "Norman Loves Rose" then followed it with "The Wild Duck".
