From 1950 to 1951, he attended the École nationale supérieure des arts et techniques du théâtre and the École de la rue Blanche in Paris.
Prior to acting, he worked as a printer, then as a machine grinder at the Renault factories in Boulogne-Billancourt, then as an office boy in an insurance company and then sold newspapers at auction.
