After finishing school with a high school diploma, she moved to Braunschweig in 1983. Here Ruge studied biology and German studies for higher teaching qualifications. In 1987 she completed her traineeship. Ruge then became a teacher at a high school in Wolfsburg. At the same time she completed her acting training at a private school. During this time she was involved in numerous radio broadcasts at NDR. From 1988, Ruge was a script and director's assistant at the SFB for feature film productions as well as an editorial employee in the SFB's family program in Berlin.

In the same year she completed her teaching career in Wolfsburg. In 1989 Ruge became an editor at RIAS TV and later a presenter of the "Abendjournal" and "Breakfast Television". Ruge became known to the general public in mid-1989 as co-presenter and later presenter of the ZDF "heute journals". In 1994 she became chief spokeswoman for the ZDF nighttime magazine "heutenacht", which she founded. In 1997 she moderated the tabloid magazine "People Today" on ZDF, where Ruge reported on people of public interest every evening.

Her personal trademark in this format was the statement that always came at the end of the program: "Everything will be fine." In February 2007 she hosted "People Today" for the last time. In the same year, 2007, she presented her fashion shows on ZDF under the titles "nina.ruge.mode" and "Everything will be fine". Ruge lives in Munich and, having hosted over a dozen shows, is one of the most successful presenters on German television. She has been married to the CEO of Linde AG, Wolfgang Reitzle, since 2001.
