In 1968, Patricia Routledge and Leslie Uggams tied for the Tony Award for Lead Actress in a Musical. Patricia won for "Darling of the Day" and Leslie won for "Hallelujah, Baby!". Theirs was the fifth of ten ties in Tony Award history.

Named as the Personality of the Year by the Grand Order of Water Rats (a showbiz charity).

She attended and graduated from Birkenhead High School Academy in Birkenhead, Wirral, England.

Sister of Reverend Canon Graham Routledge (born Kenneth Graham Routledge in 1927, died 1989) and Edgar Routledge (born Edgar H. Routledge, born and died 1926).

She appeared in a play called "Best of Friends", at the Hampsted Theatre, London (2006), about George Bernard Shaw, a Museum Curator and a Mother Abbess (Routledge).

Daughter of Isaac Edgar (1898-1986) and Catherine (née Perry) Routledge (1900-1957). They married in 1924.

She gave a classic performance as Mrs. Malaprop in "The Rivals" on the London stage.

Had no nieces or nephews, since one of her brothers died as an infant and her other brother, although married, did not have children.

She was given the Freedom of the Borough of Wirral on 17 January 2025.

She received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Liverpool (1999), an honorary Master of Arts degree from the University of Chichester (2001), an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Lancaster University (2008), and an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Chester at Chester Cathedral on 15 March 2019.

Her funeral service took place at Chichester Cathedral on 5 November 2025.
