Biography

S.L. Rothafel was born on July 9, 1882 in Stillwater, Minnesota, USA. He was a composer and producer, known for Flying with the Marines (1918), Under Four Flags (1918) and False Gods (1919). He died on January 13, 1936 in New York City, New York, USA.

Legendary showman and theater magnate, he was managing director of two of New York City's legendary entertainment palaces, the Roxy Theater (demolished) and perhaps his most enduring achievement, the Radio City Music Hall, where his elaborate office is still referred to as the Roxy Suite.

The last ever Roxy theatre, the RKO Roxy, to have been opened by him in New York City was at 49th Street and Sixth Avenue. Its longevity was from 1932 - 1956 and has vanished without trace.

Was married to Rosa Freedman. Their great-granddaughter is actress Amanda Peet.

Was a United States Marine.
