Jane had amateur acting experience before joining The Archers, a Monday to Friday radio serial, as Monica Downs. She then moved to repertory theatre at Sheffield and York. and did various tours and television work, before getting a regular role as Nurse Ford in the television serial Emergency Ward 10. She then appeared as Jill Harvey, the daughter of the owner of the motel, in Crossroads. She was educated at Sutton Coldfield Grammar School and the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama. She was first married to television director Tim Jones, then to chartered surveyor David Dunger, by whom she had a daughter, Sorrel, and a son, Harry.

Has a daughter, Sorrel born 1975 and son David born 1978.

Her father was a bank manager and her brother a vicar She was educated at Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama,After some amateur acting she joined the cast of The Archers, a radio serial as Monica Downs then went into rep at Sheffield Playhouse and The Theatre Royal York and a theatre at Kew in 1971 before playing Jill,Richardson in the tv serial Crossroads.

Her family revealed in June 2022 that she was suffering from Alzheimer&#39;s disease.
