Almost walked out on his current job as play-by-play announcer with the WWE after they asked him to become "J.R." and wear a cowboy hat. He said that cowboys were from Texas, not Oklahoma, and didn't feel it was appropriate. After much persuasion, he conceded to Vince McMahon's demands and gave in. He is now widely-recognized as the most popular broadcaster in the history of the company.

Suffers from Bells Palsy, a condition that is responsible for paralyzing half his face. He has had it since January 25, 1995.

Played a major part in bringing superstar Mick Foley to WCW and WWE.

Created a line of barbecue sauces called "J.R.'s Slobberknocker BBQ Sauce," sold through World Wrestling Entertainment Shopzone. The cap on the bottle is a replica of his trademark black cowboy hat.
