Recognized for his storytelling skills in feature films, television series and character-based, story-driven long-form documentaries, Jason's narrative credits range from Robert Altman's classic Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean to the improvisational television comedy Free Ride. His documentary credits reflect a career at the forefront of one of today's most vital storytelling art forms. They include the Oscar-nominated Blues Highway; R.J. Cutler's groundbreaking Emmy Award-winning series American High; Emmy Award-winning HBO films Memphis PD and Teen Killers; Dick Wolf's NBC cinema verité series Law & Order: Crime & Punishment; three-time Oscar-winner Mark Jonathan Harris's Breaking Point: The War for Democracy in Ukraine; and Joshua Rofé and Oscar winner Jordan Peele's four-part Amazon series Lorena, which premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Additional production awards include a Robert F. Kennedy Award, DGA Award, Peabody Award, numerous Emmys and Emmy nominations and major prizes at American and international film festivals. As a story and editorial consultant, Jason's contributions have had a significant influence on a wide range of independent narrative and documentary films, including: Academy Award winner Mitchell Block's Sara, a portrait of one woman's ordeal at the hands of a sexual predator; Picture a Scientist, Ian Cheney's look at women scientists' struggles with harassment and inequality; the award-winning narrative short Desert Prayer from Amelia Rose Blaire; Emmy winner Robyn Symon's investigative report Do No Harm; Apo Bazidi's Syrian refugee sagas Resistance is Life and How Far Is Home; and Brett Fallentine's multi-award-winning story of Compton cowboys Fire on the Hill. In 2001, Jason was elected to membership in American Cinema Editors [ACE], an honorary society of distinguished editors, one of a handful of documentary editors to be so honored. He has served as Associate Director of the ACE Board, three terms as Governor of the Television Academy and almost two decades on the Academy's Picture Editors and Documentary Peer Groups Executive Committees. In addition to his teaching duties at USC, Jason is a frequent guest lecturer at film schools, has led international workshops on editing and storytelling through the U.S. State Department's American Film Showcase, and was the first picture editor to serve as a mentor at the Stowe (Vt.) Story Labs Screenwriting Workshop. Awarded an MFA in Film in 2018, Jason is completed a craft-based memoir, Everything Has Meaning: Confessions of a Film Editor, chronicling his exploration into the art of molding the inner life of characters that drive every story.
