Malena Roncayolo is a Venezuelan filmmaker with higher education studies in arts and languages in France and the United States. For 25 years she has worked as screenwriter, art director, film director and executive producer of several feature films, documentaries, as well as commercial, artistic, corporate and institutional projects.
In 1986 she directed Casa Tomada (Taken House), a short fiction film awarded internationally, followed by Pacto de Sangre (Blood Pact, 1987), her first feature film.
Between 1989 and 1991 she produced and directed Nuestros Inmigrantes (Our Immigrants), a series of six documentaries for Venezuelan TV. She has also directed and co-produced art documentaries with Brazil and France.
She has produced films and documentaries related to Human Rights issues and violence against women, working together with civil organizations.
In 1997 she directed and produced the TV film La Gloria de Mamporal (Mamporal's Glory).
In 2002 she directed and produced "Acosada en Lunes de Carnaval" (Harassed in Carnaval's Monday), a co-production between Venezuela, Mexico and Colombia, screening in various international film festivals.
She wrote the script and produced and directed her last documentary feature "De Navíos, Ron y Chocolate" (On Ships, Rum and Chocolate, 2013) about the 19th century French immigration to the Caribbean, an ambitious historical project that took her 7 years to complete between Venezuela and France.
She has received numerous national and international awards during her career in film festivals such as Bahía (Brazil), Torino (Italy) and Mérida and Caracas (Venezuela).
