Marcia Romano
Marcia Romano is a Franco-Argentinian screenwriter and director, born in Buenos Aires and based in Paris. She studied film at the University of Paris VIII and La F.E.M.I.S (Screenwriting Program). She began her career on film sets with directors such as Yolande Zauberman and Noémie Lvovski before moving into development for production companies including Fidélité and IMA Films. In 1997, she penned her first screenplay with Emmanuelle Bercot for Bercot's short film Les Vacances. Since then, Marcia has written with a wide range of talented filmmakers, including François Ozon, Emmanuel Bourdieu, Éric Rochant, Xavier Giannoli, and Audrey Diwan. She co-wrote Standing Tall (La Tête Haute), directed by Emmanuelle Bercot, which opened the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. In 2021, she wrote the screenplays for Suprêmes with Audrey Estrougo, Peaceful (De son vivant) with Emmanuelle Bercot, and Happening (L'événement) with Audrey Diwan. All three films premiered at the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals, with Happening winning the Golden Lion in Venice. That same year, she served on the jury of the 47th Deauville American Film Festival. In 2024, Marcia made her directorial debut. Together with Benoît Sabatier, she wrote and directed Fotogenico, which was selected by ACID at the Cannes Film Festival and recognized for its originality and distinctive artistic vision. Première magazine described it as "an electric, ultra-sensitive film, yet never sentimental, capable of re-enchanting a French cinema that has become too well-groomed," while Cultea hailed it as "a marginal little gem," highlighting its punk energy and singular tone. Marcia's latest project is the Netflix feature L'Avocat (working title), directed by Tristan Séguéla and starring Laurent Lafitte (scheduled for release in 2026). Across both her screenwriting and personal projects, Marcia Romano's work is marked by sharp storytelling, bold cinematic choices, and a distinctive voice in contemporary French and international cinema.
