- American character actress, prolific on Broadway (1926-45). Generally played smaller roles on screen, best known as Mrs. Meade from Gone with the Wind (1939).
- Had 2 children with her late ex-first husband Capt. Charles James Hutchinson including actress Josephine Hutchinson (October 12, 1903-June 4, 1998).
- Her four siblings are Dora Collota Altom (nee Doty; September 10, 1864-December 4, 1944), Wallace Peter Doty (October 8, 1873-August 11, 1942), Maurice V. Doty (1875-1892) and Edith Roberts (September 17, 1899-August 20, 1935). Edith died from sepsis she brought during childbirth with her only child, a son Robert Carrter, at 35.
- Fourth of five children of hotel manager Wallace Walkin Doty (August 1843-February 13, 1919) and his wife Eudora Evelyn Doty (nee Torrey; May 1845-March 21, 1917).
