Biography

  • Dirk 'Dick' Rijneke is a cinematographer, director and producer. He studied with Frans Zwartjes at the Free Academy in the Netherlands and made a range of experimental films. Several highly acclaimed and award-winning documentaries followed such as Living One's Life and Pinkel, which were successfully screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and traveled the international festival circuit.

He made two award-winning features that opened the Rotterdam Film Festival (IFFR). His first fiction feature Voro-Nova premiered at the Film Festival of Toronto (TIFF) and opened the 14th edition of the (IFFR) Rotterdam Film Festival. Hubert Bals festival founder and director at that time motivated his choice: "I watched it breathlessly. It's to do with film history." Wall.Variety wrote: Rijneke's pictures often capture attention by their pure beauty. Framing, and camera movements sometimes remind one of Antonioni or Tarkovsky. Voro-Nova is a film to see and hear, to absorb, and to remember, as a touchstone for other pictures.

With his collaborator Mildred van Leeuwaarden, Rijneke initiated, conceived and produced the large scale production and award-winning City Life, the first international episode film about life in twelve different cultures. Directors from all over the world, including Kieslowski, Mrinal Sen, Béla Tarr and Rijneke & van Leeuwaarden contributed. City Life was selected as opening film of the 19th Rotterdam Film Festival (IFFR) and it was the closing film of the Berlinale. City Life became an absolute festival hit.

Rijneke also co-produced films such as action-packed fiction feature Reykjavik-Rotterdam, Hier (Yesterday) and multi award-winning and Tiger nominated Silent Ones in which he also was involved as a cinematographer.
