Kevin joined the Backstreet Boys about a year after his father died of cancer. He founded the environmental organization, "Just Within Reach" (JWR), in memory of him. JWR was his fathers initials (Jerald Wayne Richardson).

Kevin and Backstreet Boys group mate Brian Littrell are first cousins. Kevin's mother, Ann, is the older sister of Brian's father, Harold.

His son, Mason Frey Richardson, was born at 4:56 am on Tuesday, July 3rd 2007, weighing in at 8 lbs, 2 oz and 20.5 inches long.

Welcomed second son, Maxwell Haze Richardson, born on July 10, 2013.
