  • Tim Rhys was born in Bangor, Maine and raised in Connecticut and Maine. His mother was a school teacher whose maiden name was Linda Petrillo. His father, Eugene W. Rice, was a Navy Frogman and marathon runner who worked in the insurance industry. He has a younger brother, Jonathan, a teacher and father of seven. Another brother, Matthew, drowned at the age of 24 while diving for sea urchins off the coast of Maine. At Notre Dame High School in West Haven, Connecticut, and at Bucksport High School in Maine, Rhys ran track, cross-country and played baseball. At the University of Maine he majored in journalism and was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. When he graduated he traveled the country on his motorcycle, eventually living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Seattle and Los Angeles. He acted in several theater productions in Hollywood, wrote screenplays and eventually attended film school in Vancouver, British Columbia. Before launching MovieMaker Magazine he supported himself by working in a paper mill, bartending, parking cars, teaching school, selling advertising, writing a newspaper column and editing magazines. For 15 years he was a full-time single father; during that time he made several award-winning films. His wife, Jessica, is a professional illustrator. They divide their time between Los Angeles and their farm in Maine.
