- I love to be scared, I love terrifying sequences and edge of your seat suspense. To sum it up, I love films - plain and simple. I was a film-fan before I was a film-maker. I have sat in audiences where we all shivered and screamed, so the major reason why I wanted to make this film [The Ugly (1997)] is that I can sit down in a room where I make the audience shiver and scream.
- People loathe flashbacks and all that sort of stuff. But I think it's important to take risks and not be afraid.
- For me, the important thing is the film. I grew up in a movie theater. I grew up watching films. It's not about being director. It's not about sitting on set and having coffee made for you. It's about people sitting in the darkness and screaming or cheering or laughing or running for the exits because they're so scared. It's about that thing up on the screen.
- [about The Ugly (1997)] I thought, 'Look, I don't know if I'll ever get to make another movie again, so I'm going to take as many risks as I can.' I'd rather take many risks and have some of them not work, than be safe and only go halfway.
