Closely associated with dancer/choreographer Bob Fosse, she was his protégé and partner, both personally and professionally, during the 1970s (though Fosse was separated from, but still married to, Gwen Verdon), and continues to this day promoting his name and dancing style.

Replaced Gwen Verdon as "Roxie Hart" in the stage version of "Chicago" in 1977 although there was a 25-year age difference. Verdon, herself, was married to Bob Fosse.

Despite playing a part based on herself in All That Jazz (1979), director Bob Fosse still made her audition several times before she was cast.

Won Broadway's 1997 Tony Award as Best Choreographer for a revival of "Chicago." She was nominated on three other occasions: in 1975, as Best Actress (Musical) for "Goodtime Charley;" in 1978 as Best Actress (Featured Role - Musical) for "Dancin';" and in 1999 as Best Director (Musical), along with collaborator Richard Maltby Jr., for "Fosse."

She choreographed "Fosse", performed at the Prince of Wales Theatre, which was nominated for Best Musical at the 2001 (2000 season) Laurence Olivier Theatre Awards.

Founder of the Broadway Theater Project in Tampa, Florida, an international program that connects students with real-life professionals who teach the ins and outs of theater life on- and off-stage.

First worked with Bob Fosse as a chorus member in "Pippin" on Broadway in 1972.
