Biography

Rienits was a journalist, novelist, playwright and screenwriter. During the 1930s he worked as a journalist in various towns, eventually moving from Kyogle to Sydney in 1936. By the late 1930s he was also writing radio and stage plays and doing some acting. In 1939 he helped form the Playwrights Advisory Board. Rienits' research was used for the 1949 film Eureka Stockade. He moved to England in 1949 and established himself as a leading television, radio and film writer. Rienits returned to Australia throughout the 1950s, including working for two years at the ABC as in-house script editor from 1959-61. After this he returned to England where he lived until his death.

In the 1940s, had a regular column in the Australian 'Daily Mirror' called "At The Stage Door With Rex Rienits".

His radio play "Wide Boy" was banned by the BBC on Wednesday 6th February 1952. Fully rehearsed and recorded by its 16-strong cast, the BBC Light Programme announced that the theme of a spiv who turns to murder was deemed unsuitable for an 8pm audience. Rienits included it as a short story in his novel "Assassin for Hire", published the same year, whilst a film version also appeared, Wide Boy (1952).
