Biography

  • Ted Ray was very popular as a radio star in such 1950s shows as Ray's A Laugh. Before WWII, he was well known on stage as a variety artiste and was quite an accomplished violinist - an effective part of his act. Perhaps his personality and style were less suitable for television and he did not always seem comfortable in the medium. He was, however, a welcome guest on light entertainment shows and this contributor well remembers how much fun he could be in a Dennis Norden retrospective on variety acts, screened on British television in the mid-1970s. In 1975 he was badly hurt in a car crash and it seemed that he might face prosecution for possible intoxication at time of the accident. His sons, Robin and Andrew were well known on TV and the cinema respectively for his two specialities - music and the movies.

  • Born in Wigan, Ted's father was a well known comedian and violinist. Ted got his father to teach him to play the violin On leaving school Ted became an office boy in a cattle food firm then a dock laborer until a friend talked him into joining him as a ship's steward. On returning to Britain he became an entertainer teaming up with a pianist then went solo dressing up in a gypsy costume and calling himself Nedlo the Gypsy Violinist touring music halls. As he started making a name he discarded the gypsy disguise and just did comedy and before long he had his own radio show receiving 3 radio awards. After a while he was elected KIing Ray of The Grand Order of Water Rats. His son Andrew became an actor.
