Biography

The daughter of a Berlin physician, Karin Rasenack learned her craft at the Max-Reinhardt-Academy under the tutelage of Hilde Körber. She first acted on stage in West Berlin and in Pforzheim and soon graduated to leading roles. Rasenack was engaged for several seasons at the prestigious Thalia Theatre in Hamburg. In later years, she toured extensively as guest performer, both nationwide and overseas, some on far flung stages, such as in Buenos Aires and in East Asia.

Parallel to her prolific career as a stage actress, Rasenack also found television a viable medium, appearing on the small screen from 1965, initially as a supporting actress. An important early portrayal was that of a leading character in the first instalment of Edgar Reitz’s epic series Heimat: A Chronicle of Germany (1984), which followed the life of a Rhineland family against the backdrop of social events and political upheavals, spanning the years from 1840 to the present time. Rasenack later co-starred in two popular series with Uschi Glas: the romantic comedy Zwei Münchner in Hamburg (1989) and the drama Anna Maria - Eine Frau geht ihren Weg (1994), which became one of the most watched programs aired by the privately owned TV station Sat 1. She made frequent guest appearances in episodic crime series, often as the story’s main protagonist.

Karin Rasenack, who was fluent in English, French and Spanish, was also a busy voice actress. In addition to acting in radio plays, she provided German dubbing for, among others, Dana Wynter, Barbara Rush, Lynn Redgrave, Hope Lange, Celeste Holm, Gloria DeHaven and Diane Baker. The actress passed away in Hamburg on June 10 2026 at the age of 87.
