Rod Quantock OAM is a pioneering Australian comedian, writer and political satirist who has been a major figure in Australian comedy for more than five decades. Born in Melbourne and raised in Coburg, Quantock initially studied architecture at the University of Melbourne, where he discovered his talent for comedy while performing in the university's Architects' Revue in 1968.
During the 1970s, Quantock became an important figure in Melbourne's emerging live-comedy scene, performing at venues including the Flying Trapeze Cafe, the Last Laugh and the Comedy Café. He helped establish Melbourne as a centre for Australian stand-up comedy and later became an inaugural board member of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
His television career included appearances and writing roles on programs such as Australia, You're Standing In It, Fast Forward, The Big Gig, Denton, BackBerner and Good News Week. He also became widely recognised through his long-running television advertising appearances for Capt'n Snooze.
Quantock is particularly renowned for combining humour with political satire, social commentary and environmental issues. His comedy has frequently tackled politics, social justice, sustainability and climate change. His innovative Bus, Son of Tram shows, which turned Melbourne bus trips into theatrical comedy tours, became another distinctive part of his career.
His contribution to Australian performing arts was recognised with the 2004 Sydney Myer Performing Arts Award, and in 2015 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to the performing arts and to conservation and sustainability.
