Biography

Manuel Pérez was born on November 19, 1939 in Havana, Cuba. He was a writer and director, known for The Man from Maisinicu (1973), Páginas del diario de Mauricio (2006) and Río Negro (1977). He was married to Martha Valladares Méndez. He died on November 6, 2025 in Havana, Cuba.

His 1973 thriller drama film The Man from Maisinicu was entered into the 8th Moscow International Film Festival where it won a Special Mention.

Manuel Pérez was a prestigious Cuban filmmaker, director of one of the Icaic Creation Groups (1988-1992), who stood out for the productions Madagascar, Hello Hemingway, Adorables Mentiras and La Bella del Alhambra.

For his contribution to national cinematography, he belonged to the Board of Directors of the Foundation of New Latin American Cinema and held the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of the Arts of Cuba.

Manuel Pérez was a Cuban film director and screenwriter.
