James was born in Boxmoor, Hertfordshire, where his name Puddephatt hails from. He performed in various shows for the National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) whilst a young man. He studied at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, and graduated with an honors diploma in 1992. James is married and has two children. Child No.1 and child no.2.
