Dimitris Psathas(1907-1979)

Dimitris Psathas was a Pontic Greek journalist, satirist, playwright, and screenwriter. He was born in the city of Trabzon (Trebizond) in the Ottoman Empire, and migrated to Greece in the aftermath of the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922). He became a professional journalist in 1925, and he spend several years as a chronicler of trials in the courts of Athens. He published two volumes of satirical tales in 1937 and 1938, presenting surreal dialogues and situations taking place within the courts. Becoming famous for his witty depictions of characters, he soon started writing comedy plays for the Athenian theaters. He spend over 30 years in writing comedies, while also publishing more sober historical works about the Greek Resistance and a few travelogues. His works often satirized gullible nouveau riche people, overly greedy and corrupt businessmen, ruthless embezzlers and con-artists with holier-than-thou attitudes, and gambling addicts.
