- French conductor, he studied the trumpet and composition at the Paris Conservatoire. Became music director at the Opéra-Comique in Paris until 1959. Prêtre was a favored conductor of Maria Callas. He was made an Officier of the Légion d'honneur in 1984 and is also an Italian Commendatore.
