Biography

In November 2003 the Royal Palace made the announcement of his engagement to journalist Letizia Ortiz. The couple married the following year at the Cathedral of Madrid.

He has also had a military education in the three branches of the Spanish Army.

Was a member of the Olympic sailing team at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, during whose inauguration he appeared as a standard-bearer for the Spanish team.

Studied at the Autonomous University of Madrid and graduated in Law. He was enrolled in a Master's program in international relations at Georgetown University in Washington, graduating in 1995.

As the heir to the throne of Spain, his title was "Prince of Asturias" (equivalent to the United Kingdom's Prince of Wales).

Together, for over 50 years, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia have devoted themselves to Spain.

Sincere and generous collaboration is the best way to fulfill the legitimate aspirations of each person and achieve great collective goals for the common good and the general interest.

There must not be favoured treatment for those occupying a position of public responsibility.

I begin my reign with profound emotion at the honour of accepting the Crown, aware of the responsibility it entails and with the greatest hope for the future of Spain.
