In the 1950s she became the first black operatic singer to play leading roles, such as Tosca, on network television.

She starred with her husband, bass-baritone William Warfield and famous scat singer Cab Calloway in the famous and hugely successful 1950s world tour of Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess".
