- Son of Carroll Pratt.

- His father, a sound engineer in radio and film, was also named Carroll. He worked on Showgirl's Luck (1931), considered by the Australian National Film & Sound Archive to be Australia's first film with sound.
- He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. His B-24 bomber was shot down over Austria, and the crew parachuted. He was captured and held prisoner for almost two years, escaping from a German camp in 1945.
