Biography

Velu Prabhakaran was born on May 6, 1957 in Madras, Madras State, India. He was an actor and director, known for Nalaya Manithan (1989), Sivan (1999) and Puthiya Aatchi (1995). He was married to Shirley Das and P. Jayadevi. He died on July 18, 2025 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

He was known for his themes highlighting atheism and revolutionary subjects in his films.

In 2000, he began pre-production on a film titled Deepavali and approached Kamal Haasan to play the lead role. However, the actor's rejection meant that the project was later shelved.

Prabakaran began as a cinematographer before making his directorial debut with the 1989 horror film Nalaya Manithan, before also directing its sequel Adhisaya Manithan (1990).

Velu Prabhakaran was an Indian filmmaker, cinematographer and actor.

Following several box office failures he gave up filmmaking and decided to become full-time actor.
