He began his career as a teacher. After a brief stint at AVRO, Postema moved to Vara in 1960.

After announcing his desire to return to work in a NOVA documentary on his 65th birthday, he was offered a job at the RVU (Federation of Public Health and the Environment). Starting in 1998, he produced a series of programs there. He also worked for the Rotterdam station Radio Rijnmond. Later, he was in demand, particularly on the conference circuit, as a chairperson, discussion leader, or presenter. He wrote a monthly column for the seniors' magazine Plus.

In his talk show "Een klein uur U" (1969: for which he won the Silver Nipkow Disc that same year), later called "Een groot uur U," Postema discussed controversial topics at the time, such as divorce, abortion, sterilization, and euthanasia. Actor, dancer, comedian and writer Albert Mol made his coming ut in this program.

In 2007 he received the Beeld en Geluid Oeuvre Award and in 2012, and on his eightieth birthday, a street was named after him at the Media Park in Hilversum.

In 2012, he also had a small role as a pastor in the feature film "Het bombardement" (The Bombardment). On the program Kunststof TV, he confirmed that this was his acting debut, but that's not entirely true. He had previously made a cameo in "Toen was geluk heel gewoon" (When Happiness Was Very Common) and, in the 1960s, appeared as himself in "Ja zuster, nee zuster," where he interviewed Grandpa (Leen Jongewaard) on the street.

In a program of all Dutch television broadcasters together, he presented the 1963 Eleven Cities Tour. He reported on this legendary Eleven Cities Tour from the studio in Bussum, smoking heavily.

His father died when he was four years old and after the bombing of Rotterdam the family moved to Vlaardingen in 1940.

He attempted forays into commercial television in the 1980s and 1990s, but these were unsuccessful. He was one of the faces of the failed sports channel Sport 7.

One of the most successful programs Postema created for public broadcasting in the mid-1980s was "Klasgenoten" (Classmates). Initially, this was for VARA, later for Veronica. The program ran from 1985 to 1989, after which Postema joined Joop van den Ende to create programs for the unsuccessful channel TV10. This ultimately led him to RTL 4. Ultimately, 175 episodes of "Klasgenoten" were produced.

In 1959, on the advice of classmate Bram van Erkel, Postema worked as an editor for the AVRO radio program "Minjon," hosted by Gerrit den Braber. A year later, he applied for a job at VARA radio. He started there on May 1, 1960, as a reporter for the VARA radio program "Dingen van de dag" (Things of the Day). He transitioned to television in 1963 when he became a reporter for the program "Achter het Nieuws" (Behind the News).

He was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1991.

Postema graduated from the Rotterdam teacher training college and, after completing his military service, began teaching at a training institute for working young people in Rotterdam. He taught there for five years.

Koos Postema also presented Radio Tour de France. During the Winter Games in Calgary (1988), he hosted the breakfast program "Olympic Breakfast.".
