  • While studying, he became interested in acting and was discovered when performing in a school play.

    His talent for comedic acting made him known for the public when he debuted with Pengar - en tragikomisk saga (1947), which he directed himself. He is today best remembered for his character Fabian Bom, always a perfectionist until he falls in love. Similar is also his character Sten Stensson, an academic upholding a high moral standard. In Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal (1957), he also played drama, in the role as Jof the jester. After retiring from the movies, he returned to the stage playing light comedy until the age of 85.

In his last years, he was confined to a wheelchair and completely lost his ability to communicate. He died peacefully in the hospital following an infection. He was 92 years old and surrounded by his wife and daughter.
