- Erich Ponto was born on December 14, 1884 in Lübeck [now Schleswig-Holstein], Germany. He was an actor and writer, known for The Third Man (1949), Sky Without Stars (1955) and Schneider Wibbel (1939). He was married to Tony Kresse. He died on February 4, 1957 in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

- Incisive German character actor, on stage from 1908. The son of a manufacturer, he was initially trained as a pharmacist, but instead decided to take on acting lessons under Hans Lackner in Munich. Ponto rarely enjoyed leads (except for playing the title role in _Schneider Wibbel (1939)_ ), but was consistently impressive in eccentric, shrewd or sinister character parts. He achieved some international fame as Dr. Winkel in Carol Reed's _The Third Man (1949).

- The German film business also profited from his impressive variety and he "refined" movies like "Kein Angst vor grossen Tieren" (1953), "Sauerbruch - Das war mein Leben" (1954), "Das fliegende Klassenzimmer" (1954) and "Robinson soll nicht sterben" (1956).
- The actor Erich Ponto made an apprenticeship as a pharmacist before he turned to the theater. After action lessons by Hans Lackner he worked as an extra for the present. In 1908 he got a contract at the Stadttheater Passau. His theater career led him to Düsseldorf, Dresden and Berlin in the next years.
