Biography

María Antonieta Pons was born on June 11, 1922 in Havana, Cuba. She was an actress, known for La vida íntima de Marco Antonio y Cleopatra (1947), Teatro del crimen (1957) and Romance en Puerto Rico (1962). She was married to Ramón Pereda and Juan Orol. She died on August 20, 2004 in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico.

Playing seductive, heartbroken women, punctuated by wild musical and dance scenes in the nightclubs.

Was one of a half-dozen stars whose extravagant costumes and dance numbers earned them the nickname "Tropical Queens" and created a style that lasted into the 1950s, and helped define the tropical-dancer movie genre know as "rumbera" films.

Made Mexico her home for more than six decades.
