Ryan is part-owner of renowned London production company, Deadpan Films. His partners are Matt Wyllie, Tim Mackenzie-Smith and Jim Williams.

In April 2015 at Houston WorldFest Perfect State won the Grand Jury Award for Best Sci-Fi short.

Was a member of the National Youth Theatre and a graduate of the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art.

Ryan's oldest brother Grant Philpott was producer of Harry Hill's TV Burp (2001) and now produces other TV programs, as well as film projects. He is also an artist and illustrator. His younger brothers are, Sebastian who is a trumpet player,a graduate of RCM/RAM, who performs in West End shows, classical orchestras and as a session player for recording bands. The youngest brother is Barnaby, a trombonist and graduate of NYO/RCM who also performs in the West End, in orchestras and with bands at international venues and festivals. These two musicians are part of the brass/drum ensemble, Old Dirty Brasstards.
