Biography

Petar II Petrovic-Njegos (Njegusi 1813 - Cetinje 1851), was a bishop-ruler of Montenegro, and also a writer and philosopher, and regarded as the most influental poet in Serbian literature. He was appointed in the bishop's honor in St. Petersburg in 1833. He was appointed as a bishop in San Petersburg in 1833. His reign lasted from 1830 to 1851. His grandiose masterpieces 'Luca mikrokozma' ('The light of Microcosm') printed in Belgrade in 1845, 'Gorski vijenac' ('The Mountain Wreath') printed in Vienna in 1847, 'Lazni car Scepan mali' ('Scepan the Small, the Pretender') printed in Trieste in 1851, made him the greatest South-Slavic poet. He died in 1851, at the age of 38, 21 years to the day since he had come to power. He was buried at Cetinje and four years later his remains were moved to the tomb on top of Mt Lovcen, on the peak called Jezerski Vrh.
