- He was the first controller of BBC2, which launched in 1964, and oversaw successes such as Match of the Day (1964), The Likely Lads (1964) and The Great War (1964). In 1965, he became controller of BBC1, and was succeeded in his former role by David Attenborough.
- After serving as controller of BBC1 for two years, he left the BBC to become the first Managing Director of London Weekend Television (1968-1971).
