Biography

Nikos Papatakis was born on July 5, 1918 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He was a writer and director, known for The Photograph (1986), The Depths (1963) and Oi voskoi (1967). He was married to Olga Karlatos and Anouk Aimée. He died on December 17, 2010 in Paris, France.

Parents are from Greece.

After fighting against the fascist Italians in Ethiopia, he lived in Libanon, Greece and finally emigrated to Paris in 1939.

In 1957, he went to New York for political reasons, where he got to know John Cassavetes and became co-producer of his movie Shadows (1958).

In the 1950s, Papatakis presided over a popular club in the arty Saint-Germain-Des-Pres neighborhood of Paris called The Red Rose, which was frequented by foreign celebrities and often turned away patrons because it was so crowded.
