Nicolae Opritescu

Nicolae (Nicky) Opritescu, was born on April 30, 1947 in Bucharest. His father was a Medical Doctor. He finished the Film Director's Section of the famous Institutul de Arta Teatrala si Cinematografica "Ion Luca Caragiale" (IATC), today's "National University of Theater and Film" Bucharest in 1969. In 1968 he was able to interview French movie director Robert Bresson at the "International Film Festival" in Cannes. In 1976 he made a documentary "Nasterea unui Miracol" ("The Birth of a Miracle"). After making two movies, under very difficult conditions, "Vis de Ianuarie" ("January Dream") in 1978, and "Sezonul Pescarusilor" ("The Seagull Season") in 1984, which was stopped by the cenzorship of the authorities, he decided to emigrate, so he moved in 1988 to France, as his wife was a French subject. After following some qualification courses at the Paris Film Institute, he became a film professor at the University of Nantes. In 1999 he won a film project with the screenplay "Manipulation" by Mihai Creanga but the film was realized by another colleague, Marius Theodor Barna, under the title "Sindromul Timisoara" ("The Timisoara Syndrom").
