- He is son of Toru Okuyama who is former president of movie production company, Shochiku. He is former vise president of Shochiku. He was fired with his father, cause of "coup d'etat" in the company. After that, he made his own movie production company, "Team Okuyama".
- Corporate Rise: Before moving exclusively into independent film producing, he climbed the ranks to serve as the Executive Vice President of Shochiku.
- Cannes Triumph: He served as the executive producer for Shôhei Imamura's masterpiece The Eel (1997), which went on to win the Palme d'Or, the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival.
- Dual-Hat Nominee: When he made his feature film directorial debut with the mystery-thriller Rampo (1994), he wrote the script as well. The project earned him dual Japan Academy Award nominations for both Best Director and Best Screenplay.
- Hachiko Connection: Early in his executive producing career, he backed the original Japanese drama film Hachiko Monogatari (1987). The film became a massive box-office hit in Japan and eventually inspired the famous Hollywood remake starring Richard Gere.
