Kazuyoshi Okuyama is an award-winning Japanese film producer and director known for shaping contemporary Japanese cinema. Born in Tokyo, Japan, he grew up with a deep connection to the movie industry. He is the son of Toru Okuyama, the former president of the historic film studio Shochiku.
Okuyama rose to prominence as a top executive and producer at Shochiku during the late 1980s and 1990s. During this era, he gained widespread acclaim for backing bold, visionary filmmakers. He famously executive produced the early, iconic works of director Takeshi Kitano, including Violent Cop (1989) and Sonatine (1993). He also executive produced Shôhei Imamura's acclaimed drama The Eel (1997), which won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 1994, Okuyama made his feature directorial debut with the mystery-thriller Rampo. His unique version of the film earned him Japan Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay. He later founded his own independent production company, Team Okuyama, to continue creating distinct projects. In 1998, he was honored with a Special Award at the Japanese Professional Movie Awards for his outstanding career achievements as a producer.
In recent years, Okuyama has remained an active and influential force in international indie cinema. He continues to produce and support diverse projects, including acclaimed films like Au Revoir L'Ete (2013), Sayonara (2015), and Erica 38 (2019).
