Biography

James O'Brien is an American independent filmmaker, screenwriter, and author. Raised in New Jersey, he attended Bergen Catholic High School before graduating from Providence College, where he transitioned from competitive collegiate athletics to studies in English and Drama. Guided by the independent DIY cinema movement, he turned his focus to filmmaking and storytelling across multiple mediums. O'Brien's career includes writing and directing his debut feature, Venice Bound, which premiered internationally at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the independent feature film Western Religion. As a screenwriter, his work spans historical adaptations and genre thrillers, including the Lionsgate feature The Night They Came Home and the screenplay adaptation of The Lost Diary of Anne Frank. Expanding into performance, he plays the role of Anton Stein in the period drama Death of a Brewer. O'Brien is also a published novelist, authoring the science fiction thriller Alias John Titor.
