Biography

Christine Nöstlinger was born on October 13, 1936 in Vienna, Austria. She was a writer and actress, known for Villa Henriette (2004), Die verlorene Wut (1989) and Ich will leben (1976). She was married to Ernst Nöstlinger. She died on June 28, 2018 in Vienna, Austria.

In 2003, she shared the first Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award with writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak.

She was a writer of over 150 children's books. After attending art school, she was planning to start her career as an illustrator when she drew a red-haired girl with an impish personality. She wrote a story to go with her drawings, and published "Fiery Frederica" in 1970. The story received more praise than the illustrations, so she became a writer.

Her father was a watchmaker, and her mother ran a nursery school. Her family became homeless after Allied forces bombed Vienna during WWII.
