Nozhkin graduated from the Mossovet Construction College. He worked on construction sites as a foreman, engineer, and site manager, wrote poetry, participated in amateur performances, and performed songs.

In 1980 he was awarded with the title "People's Artist of the RSFSR".

He began acting in films in 196, making his debut in the musical film "Two Hours Earlier". After 1985, he did not act in films anymore.

He was a laureate of the "Vasiliev Brothers State Prize of the RSFSR" in 1982.

Songs based on his lyrics, "The Last Battle" and "The Last Electric Train" are particularly well-known.

He was a member of the 'Union of Cinematographers of the USSR' (1973), and member of the 'Union of Writers of Russia'.

In March 2022, he signed an appeal in support of Russia's military invasion of Ukraine.

He also composed music. Songs based on Nozhkin's poems are featured in the films "Golden Horns" and "Finist the Bright Falcon".

He was a supporter of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, and he was also a member of the editorial board of the newspaper "Prognoz Razvitiya," regularly publishing journalistic works and poetry in this publication.

For the film "Resident's Mistake," Nozhkin performed Evgeny Agranovich's song "I drank birch sap in the spring forest", which also became quite popular.

Nozhkin was since 2015 Honorary Member of the Union of Writers of the unrecognized DPR' (= Donetsk People's Republic).

In 1961, he graduated from the Variety Arts Theatre Studio of the Moscow Variety Theatre, and was accepted into the troupe that same year.

He appeared as a participant in the first episode of the program " Blue Light " (1962).

Mikhail Nozhkin was actively involved in public life. He was known for his harsh criticism of the poets Andrei Voznesensky and Yevgeny Yevtushenko. In public speeches, he repeatedly criticized Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms.
