  • British stage and radio actress of patrician countenance, in occasional sound films from 1930. She started her acting career in New Zealand and (with the Williamson Company) in Australia, later honing her skills at the Old Vic and Drury Lane in London. Ney was for many years involved with British Actor's Equity and was a fervent advocate of live theatre. In private life she was a collector of fine arts and books.

  • She was originally cast in a prominent role in "Ben-Hur" (1959), playing the mother of the Charlton Heston and Cathy O'Donnell characters. However, as she was British and they were American, director William Wyler replaced her with Martha Scott.
