David Newman was born on February 4, 1937 in New York City, New York, USA. He was a writer and director, known for Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Superman (1978) and What's Up, Doc? (1972). He was married to Leslie Newman. He died on June 27, 2003 in New York City, New York, USA.

Served with Robert Benton as Esquire editors through the 60s.

David Newman, Ira Gasman and Cy Coleman were nominated for the 1997 Tony Award (New York City) for the Author (Book) of the Musical for "The Life".

Soon after the release of Bonnie and Clyde (1967) had made them the hottest new screenwriters in Hollywood, Newman and his partner Robert Benton were signed to prepare a screenplay based on a French novel about cannibalism, Choice Cuts.. However, their screenplay was never filmed.
