Mini bio

  • Myron "Grim" Natwick was born in 1890 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, where he is still considered a favorite son and, throughout his lifetime, displayed exhibitions of his work there. He is best known as the creator of the animated character, "Betty Boop", which often in the past was credited to Max Fleischer as she debuted in his "Out of the Inkwell" series. Natwick also worked for Disney Studios and worked on the film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), as the lead animator of the character. Mr. Natwick was given a huge tribute party for his 100th birthday. He died not long after and received tributes from many of the famous in the animation field. He was considered one of the masters of his craft.

Trivia

  • Considered by many animation artists to have been the greatest talent in the field, Grim Natwick is best remembered as the creator of Betty Boop.
  • He also helped to animate Mickey Mouse in Fantasia, Mr. Magoo, Popeye, Felix the Cat and many other 1940s and 1950s cartoon greats.
  • He was also lifelong friends with fellow veteran animator James "Shamus" Culhane, as well as industry pioneer and animator Bill Nolan.
  • Regarding his scenes of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Natwick did not rely heavily on rotoscoping stating, "We went way beyond rotoscope," and "I remember one scene I had where there were 101 rotoscoped tracings; that would mean that they traced every second frame on the film. I used drawing one and drawing one hundred and one, and I filled in the rest, because there wasn't enough in it to give us anything to animate."[20] By the end of the picture, he had animated over 120 scenes, with six assistants working under him. Natwick was responsible for animating some of the most iconic scenes in the film, including the sequences where Snow White cleans the house to Whistle While You Work, the scene where she dances with the dwarfs, and her singing "Someday My Prince Will Come".
  • Cousin of Mildred Natwick.
