Jack Murphy

Biography

Jack Murphy

Mini bio

  • Jack Murphy is a choreographer, movement director and dance teacher based in London. He has worked extensively in film, television and theatre.

His work aims to complement and realise the Director's vision and find a way, through working with the actors, to release the physical potential of the given moment. His breadth of knowledge in the field of movement enables him to support the Director's need for specific detail. This can range from the period movement of such films and theatre as Frankenstein, Vanity Fair, The Young Victoria, Remembrance of Things Past and The Doctor's Dilemma through to the more contemporary physicality and choreography required for Bridget Jones, Starter for Ten, Home or The History Boys!

He has facilitated the work of Directors such as Nadia Fall, Howard Davies, Mira Nair, Nick Hytner, Marianne Elliott, Josie Rourke, Jane Campion, Gurinda Chada and Jean Marc Valle and worked with the likes of Daniel Radcliffe, Emily Blunt, James McAvoy, Reece Witherspoon, Cate Blanchett, Colin Firth, Renee Zellweger, Daniel Craig, Frances McDormand, Ciaran Hinds and Gwyneth Paltrow.

In 2016 he presented the "Utterly Charming" 2 part documentary: You Make Me Feel Like Dancing for BBC2.

Jack trained as an actor at LAMDA 1985 -1988 and graduated with the Alec Clunes Memorial Prize. He immediately worked in theatre as an actor (Theatre Royal, Stratford East, Mercury Theatre, Colchester and the Royal National Theatre.)While performing in The Mountain Giants at the RNT he was invited to become the assistant to the Head of Movement in order to re-train as a Director of Movement, Movement Teacher and Choreographer. This consisted of a major re-study programme with Jane Gibson (Head of Movement RNT) Trish Arnold (Head of Movement GSMD) and The Royal Academy of Dance (Historical Branch)
