Biography

Hector Hugh Munro was born on December 18, 1870 in Akyab, Burma [now Myanmar]. He was a writer, known for Great Ghost Tales (1961), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955) and Tales of the Unexpected (1979). He died on November 13, 1916 in Beaumont-Hamel, Somme, France.

Well-known under nom-de-plume Saki (name of the cupbearer in "The Rubayat of Omar Khayyam").

He died at the Battle of the Somme in World War I while serving as Lance Sergeant with the 22nd Bn., Royal Fusiliers.

Voltaire is famous for having said, "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent Him." Saki, in his book "The Unbearable Bassington", Chapter 13 (1912), has his character The Archdeacon say of De la Poulett, "He spends his life explaining from his pulpit that the glory of Christianity consists in the fact that though it is not true it has been found necessary to invent it.".
