Mani Shankar Mukherjee was born on 7 December 1933 in Bongaon, Bengal Presidency, British India. Mani Shankar was a writer, known for Chowringhee (1968), Ek Je Chhilo Desh (1977) and The Middleman (1975). Mani Shankar died on 20 February 2026 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

Over seven decades, he had wrote numerous novels and short stories that explored domestic life, social changes and psychological conflicts.

Received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2021.
