He served as Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and of the National Film Development Corporation.

He was a close friend of Bimal Roy and Raj Kapoor, both of whom gave him his break in Bollywood. Consequently, he dedicated Anupama (1966) to Roy, while Anand (1971) was dedicated to Kapoor.

Has 2 sons ( Pradip and Sandeep) and 3 daughters.

Daughter Jayshree married Ashutosh Banerjee. They have a daughter named Sujata Banerjee. Sujata was a journalist with Economc Times newspaper. Sujata has a son named Toby.

Younger son Sandeep passed away from Asthma attack at railway station in Mumbai in 2001.

Grandson named Abhishek.

Grandaughter Priyanka's husband Nikhil Rajpal is a rapper using the name " One Signata Nach".

Has 3 daughters named Jaishree Banerjee, Rajshri Bhattacharya, Surashree Chatterjee.

Grandaughter Priyanka who lives in New York, is married to world famous musician, rapper Nikhil Rajpal.

Daughter Surashee Chatterjee is married to Sumeet Chatterjee. Their daughter's name is Tapur Chatterjee.

Son Pratip married Swati. Their children's names are Priyanka Mukherjee and Abhishek Abhishek Mukherjee.

Tapur Chatterjee along with twin sister Tupur Chatterjee are the granddaughters of Veteran filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee. They are famous models and appeared in music videos.They were signed by JP Dutta for a film opposite brothers Amaan and Ayaan Ali Khan (Sons of sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan). They were later replaced by twins Alina and Sana Wadiwala. The film was based on reincarnation. Eventually the film was shelved due to financial problems.

Parikshat Sahni starred in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's shelved film ""The Man From India,"(1971) Parikshat played Udham Singh, the revolutionary who shoots Col. Michael O'Dwyer, the man behind the Jalianwalla Bagh massacre, right inside the British Parliament. The film co starred Balraj Sahni as Mahatma Gandhi. It was shelved after the film went over budget and due to Balraj Sahni dieing.. It was then restarted in the late 70' with the title Jalian Wala Bagh . A new producer took over and completed the film. A role for Vinod Khanna was then created and now the film was being promoted as "Vinod Khanna " film. This was due to Parikshat Sahni declining box office stardom and distributors insisting Vinod Khanna be given more footage .The film remained unreleased due to Vinod Khanna leaving for America. Upon returning to India,Vinod completed the film and it was released in 1987.

Son Sandip Mukherjee was a editor in films. He was to turn director with the film "Lathi" in 1988. Dharmendra and Govinda were signed. The film eventually was shelved for unknown reasons.

Son Sadip was making the shelved film Esskay Pictures "Darpok" (1987) Starring Dharmendra,Sanjay Dutt, Mandakini,Swapna,Kanwaljeet, Ranjeet,Paresh Rawal,Sadashiv Amrapurkar,Sangeeta Naik, Music Director: Anu Malik, Produced and Directed by Sandip Mukherjee (Hrishikesh Mukherjee's son).

Joined theater in 1945 to be cameraman.
